How a Wedding Photographer Can Turn Wedding Photography Into a Masterpiece

By Deborah Pretty

Wedding photography is a very specialized field that requires specific training, equipment and an intimate knowledge of many types of religious and non-religious ceremonies. According to a Raleigh Wedding Photographer who started out in Magazine photography and transitioned to become a wedding photographer, he learned firsthand exactly how specific and specialized the field was. He has shared a few of his experiences below that he found to be vital that any wedding photographer possess.

1 - Familiarity with typical Church or Venue rules. Most churches will restrict the wedding photographer to operating without flash and, many times, can only photograph from certain areas. While there any many occasions a seasoned photographer can work around restrictions, this is not one of them. It comes down to technique and equipment and if the photographer does not possess these, your ceremony photographs will suffer.

2 - Backup, Backup, Backup. Weddings are one of the few events that cannot be redone. Not just from the standpoint of the ceremony but all of your friends and family who have gathered to help celebrate your special day. It is vital that your wedding-photographer has backups for every piece of equipment they rely on to do their job. Cameras, lenses, flashes, batteries, straps, brackets, etc. Once the wedding cake is eaten, your guests have arrived safely back home and the tux has been returned, the photographer is often the only one left with wedding responsibilities. Once your images are captured the need for backup is still very high. Your photographer should have your images safeguarded by way of redundant copies in geographically diverse areas to avoid any loss or damage to your photos by means of theft, fire, flood, etc.

3 - Diplomacy. Wedding Photographers are very familiar and comfortable working within family dynamics they may not be fully aware of. Whether its feuding cousins or a jealous friend, professionals photographers are trained to quickly spot and attempt to diffuse any potential conflicts before they happen. While sometimes they still happen, the photographer is not a family member or friend so they can be a true diplomat to handle and diffuse any interpersonal conflicts.

4 - Pace. Weddings go by fast... really fast actually. All of the planning you spent months working on to insure everything was perfect happens in a single day. An experienced wedding photographer is used to this pace and thrives on operating in a fast paced environment. Most wedding photographers have a list of photos in their head they use to insure all the details and moments are captured - both staged and candid.

5 - Artistry. After reading all of the above points, it would be easy to see how wedding photographers could be content with just providing coverage. However, experienced wedding photographers not only thrive in this environment but can produce unique and u artistic wedding photography that will become a treasured memory for their clients, families and friends.
